Bog-Pod Rapid Shooting Rest (RSR)

As great as the regular Bog-Pod tripods and bipods are, they are frequently considered too much of an inconvenience to carry in the field. Despite the fact that everyone agrees that a stable shooting rest is desirable and pretty much essential while hunting, a majority of hunters will leave their shooting sticks at home when venturing into the mountains.

The folks at Bog-Pod recognized this and saw the need for a smaller and more portable shooting rest that we would all be happy to take along on our hunts. Enter the Rapid Shooting Rest.

This little rest is lightweight and compact. It weighs only 22 ounces and folds to about 13 inches. The elevation range is seven inches to 11 inches. These dimensions are hard to beat for portability and utility.

(Of course, with a maximum height of only 11 inches, shots will have to be taken from the prone position, as the little RSR tripod is not tall enough to be useful from sitting, kneeling or standing, unless you can find a level stump or something to put it on. In my personal experience, deer get tired of waiting and leave the area while I unfold the legs of a tripod, elevate the head and look for a suitable location to plant it. -Editor)

With the Rapid Shooting Rest (RSR) on the market, we no longer have an excuse for not carrying a reliable and stable rest in the field. It can be stored in a backpack, daypack or in one of those oversize cargo pants pockets. The latter would permit relatively quick deployment of the rest when game appears, although it might not be terribly comfortable and one would have to be careful it did not bang against limbs and other clutter in the field, alerting game.

If you are thinking that we like this little jewel, you are right. Jim figures that if he had one of these on our Oryx hunt, he could have quickly set it up on the hood of the truck and probably gotten a shot at a large bull that was really carrying the mail.

Unfortunately, he did not have an RSR and missed his shot. Barney Fife strikes again.

The Switcheroo head is rubber padded to avoid damaging your rifle stock's finish and swivels 360 degrees. It is compatible with several other Bog-Pod shooting rest systems. However, it does not tilt, so you will need to set your RSR on a reasonably level surface.

Those red polymer pads on the legs are non-slip and will not scratch the finish on your vehicle's hood. Their footprint is larger than the bare legs to minimize sinking into soft ground (sand, mud, etc.). The Rapid Rest is well constructed and priced right, with on online discount price of about $35 (Midway USA).
