Federal Ammunition 2011 Top 10 Centerfire Rifle Cartridge Sales List

By Chuck Hawks

Curious about the popularity of centerfire rifle cartridges? Occasionally, the major ammunition manufacturers release annual sales lists by caliber. There usually isn't a dramatic change from year to year in such lists, it is more like a slow evolution. Here is Federal's ammunition sales list for their top 10 selling centerfire rifle cartridges:

  1. .223 Remington
  2. .243 Winchester
  3. .30-06 Springfield
  4. .308 Winchester
  5. .270 Winchester
  6. .30-30 Winchester
  7. 7mm Remington Magnum
  8. .22-250 Remington
  9. .300 Winchester Magnum
  10. .25-06 Remington

The most interesting changes on this Federal cartridge sales list (since 2005) are the .243 passing the .30-06 in popularity and the .308 surpassing the .270. These changes presumably reflect the increased popularity of short action rifles and cartridges. Apparently, a 1/2-inch shorter rifle is important to many consumers. Also interesting is the appearance of the .25-06 in the top 10, replacing the .338 Winchester Magnum. However, the .338 remains the best selling of all medium bore cartridges.
