"No gods before me . . .."

Every time I read those words, I think of the whole issue of priority. I remember doodling during a seminary class. Doodling is a sigh of genius . . . did you know that? Seriously, I was spacing out over the word priority. I wrote it out for some reason. Then I broke it up this way: PRIOR I TIE.

It hit me that priorities are all about making decisions about what,

  • I will tie myself to, or
  • join myself to, or
  • commit my energy and resources to.

Coming down from the mountain, Moses told the people that the Lord's first command was to do with the exclusivity of His claim on our lives. "An idol is nothing," said Paul. And yet we regularly give our energies and resources to things that become idols in our lives. Isn't it fascinating that one of today's most popular TV shows is called "American Idol"?

In any love relationship, there comes a time when the lovers say to one another, "It is you and no one else." When the Lord gave this command, it was not because He felt threatened by other gods or idols. No, it was because He knew that allegiance to false images would break our hearts and waste our lives.

Let's get real today, and ruthlessly look at our priorities. What or who gets our best? It is the right question to ask.
