About Chuck Hawks and this web site: I have been interested in history, particularly military history, since I was a child. Perhaps this is due in part to my father, who served in the USAAF/USAF during both World War II and Korea. He was intimately involved with the development of both military and civil aviation from the late 1930's well into the 1960's. A link to his autobiography appears above. I spent my childhood and youth around boats in the San Pedro and Long Beach (CA) areas and perhaps this helps explain my fascination with the great warships I so frequently observed in those far off days when they were still in active service. My own direct military experience is limited to having served in the U.S.A.F. during the Vietnam War years. Much later, I was appointed honorary historian for the USAAF / USAF 35th Fighter Group Association. This was largely due to the efforts of Rip Collins, who I met as a result of writing my article "The Best Fighter Planes of WW II." Rip is a WW II veteran who served with the 40th Fighter Squadron of the 35th Fighter Group. (Note the Fightin' Red Devils patch on the bottom of this page.)
